THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Reinhard's talk with Hilda about one man organizations leading to stagnation was surprising. If he truly believes that it shows a possible shift in his thoughts of how leadership should be handled.

The balance between the top 3 under Reinhard led to some interesting conversation. Oberstein is at a numbers disadvantage though with Mittermeyer and Reuental's opinions on the matter being the same. After being provoked by Reuental I was suprised that Oberstein got up and took a very short leave. Considering that the Kaiser was on his way, it would have been inappropriate for him to be absent. It makes me think that behind his cold facade he was getting flustered and needed a minute to recompose himself.

Now that Reuintal's reasons for following Reinhard are known, it will be easier to gauge whether he'll remain loyal or not. His thinking wasn't entirely incorrect. Reinhard has built his empire on aggressive moves to consolidate his power. Being passive isn't something Reinhard is used to and it shows in his unsteady behavior. He seems to have revived his vigor though with renewed plans to subjugate the alliance so that should put Reuental's mind at ease for now.

...even a saint needs a soldier to do the dirty work.

If there was one episode to express Reinhard's dissatisfaction of his recent ways and the struggle between his ideals, it's this. He wanted to rule in a way that did not reflect that of the Goldenbaum Dynasty, and yet it was his agressiveness and passion that landed him where he stands now.

The introduction of new rising talents (two of Lennenkanpt's previous subordinates) felt needed as Mecklinger admitted that men like them would be much needed in the future.

I also agree that the discussion that went on between Reuenthal, Wolfgang, and Oberstein was most interesting, especially when Reuenthal took a guess on what Oberstein would do involving Yang. At the end of the discusison, I was surprised to see Reuenthal sort of pray that Reinhard will stick to being his old self, that self that caused men like hiim to want to follow as this sort of beacon.

I think he may have went out to push that button in his cybernatic eyes. I've noticed he does that sometimes, especially when something interesting happens...I may be paranoid but his eyes have been bothering me for some time

The beginning discussion between Reuental, Mittermeyer, Reinhard and Oberstein was very interesting.
Reinhards decision was only a matter of time, I just can't picture him rotting away in a palace.
I probably regret this post by now.

Nothing too special? Are you serious?

Reinhard's hair flourishes again this episode. I like how all the admirals eye at each other like "no, it isn't me..."

The situation is looking a whole lot like the Battle of Vermillion, with an excited Reinhard heading in to subjugate the Alliance while Yang floats around with a comparatively small fleet. Reinhard is in high spirits because he can do battle with Yang, and Reuenthal is loyal to the aggressive Reinhard. That means that in the absence of Yang, Reuenthal might see fit to rebel.

I can see Oberstein planning to assassinate Yang. In that case he would eliminate the Kaiser's interest in such a loose cannon, then spark Reuenthal's rebellion and crush it, leaving Mittermeyer as the sole voice of opposition.

Agreed. Again Reuenthal is really turning into a match for Oberstein.

This is one of the most well-written episodes in the series. The characterization of each admiral in Reinhard's staff and the interactions between those admirals are so rich in detail. Part of the brilliance of LOGH is the way its supporting characters are treated like main characters that just don't happen to get as much screentime -- even Bittenfeld seemed to be less one-dimensional in this episode, and this exchange was the crowning moment of the episode:

Bittenfeld said:
But still, Your Majesty, until your resident castle is built, your seat of honor remains unsettled, doesn't it?

Reinhard said:
I have no need for a resident castle. Where I am is the Imperial Castle of the Galactic Reich.

So freaking happy that Reinhard is taking history by the throat again. His Admirals all seem to be a cohesive unit again, thinking in unison. It was interesting to see the discussion between Oberstein, Mittermeyer, and Reuental.

Clearly, Oberstein got a bit frustrated, which was neat to see, as usually he's very cool, composed, and nonchalant. Reutenal's thinking was correct; everyone follows Reinhard because of the unfailing aggressiveness and charisma he possesses. It's great to see him back in his territory, so to speak.

Magnificent episode. Reinhard's struggle with trying not to become another Rudolph and staying true to his nature is....incredibly interesting. As others have said, the three way conversation between Reuental, Mittermeyer, and Oberstein was intriguing as well.

On a side note, I wonder how anyone could complain about the art and animation in this season? It looks fantastic to me.

Thought that Reinhard would get pissed at that comment, but instead he realized how he was letting his own fear of repeating history bog him down and accepted it, wise.

I knew I'd been sensing that Reinhard was feeling stagnant! But he got back in business fast, so all is good. Previously I've been completely on Yang Wenli's side, but in S3, Reinhard is starting to look pretty interesting too.

God damn that sudden change in direction when Bittenfield made his speech was a little jarring, but boy was I waiting for Reinhard to inspire once more.

The scene where Oberstein organizing the funeral for Lennenkempf might appear to be nothing special but it seems that Oberstein felt somewhat sorry for Lennenkempf because of his death, probably because of his being unable to obtain the "fleet admiral" title as Oberstein promised back in a few episode earlier. Moreover, it could be that Oberstein never thought Lennenkempf would die in such pathetic manner, which is again not of his intention.

On a side note, the friction among the top 3 admirals under Reinhard's reign is just getting better and better. Each side provided their own valid point to counter the opposite, only find it came to a dead end with no clear solution, and so the struggle continues.

Reinhard's meeting with his subordinate is also a highlight of this episode, showing his resolve and decision in a very natural way which perfectly fits his character.

^Great catch! I didn't notice Oberstein's expression in that scene.

Definitely a great episode, the conversation among the 3, Reinhard and Mariendorf, the conversation among all the other admirals, it was all incredibly interesting. It was nice seeing everyone's view of Reinhard as well.

That was a great episode.

The conversation between the top three ranked admirals (ah, so it is Oberstein that is ranked along with Mittenmeyer and Reuenthal) and the conversation with all the admirals together was incredible.

I mostly loved Hilda writing the various players out. These are my thoughts

A) The Reich. Although I love so many people in the Reich (Mueller, Mittenmeyer and Reuenthal- as a character, not a person) I can't root for them. Dictatorships are only ever as good as their leader and good people can turn bad easily such as Reinhard.

B) The Alliance. These guys, Trung and Huang, excepted are just incompetent. I can't cheer them on either. The only government I want is a socialist one and they've been so far right I think they are way off course.

C) Yang Wenlii's band of merry men. Although they did set this recent turn of events into motion by refusing to live out peaceful lives they are still the heroes of the show. Yeah even if they had tried to remain peaceful there's no such thing in history of a peaceful nation living under a dictatorship so maybe they were right to keep rebelling.

D) Phezzan. It's all been very quiet on this front but you know Rubinsky will have to resurface sometime. He might not be a very good man to say the least but did he not try to maintain balance in the universe? Maybe that meant prolonging war but it's hardly his fault that both sides were locked into an endless conflict and yeah while he did eventually break the balance that was because the Alliance were about to lose anyway thanks to their ineptitude. It's difficult to know what political structure they favour though. I get the feeling Rubinsky wasn't exactly an elected ruler though. That being said there's something to love about characters like him and Trunhit that survive and keep saving their own skin.

E) The Goldenbaum Dynasty. It was crap and it's dead. Let it go already, let it go. That means you too Meerkatz. The only way I could support them if it was brought back but without any power buy as a way to continue its rich history like the Queen of the United Kingdom.

F) El Facil. This confuses me. I was under the impression that El Facil was conquered by the Empire and Yang led its citizens to safety, but apparently they are under the Alliance still so I guess I was wrong. I guess I can get behind their desire to be independent, but as long as they do it in a non violent way.

G) The Earth Cult. These guys are evil or mind controlled crazies but I can't wait to see what they do next.

So in short my favourites to least favourite go:

1st C- Team Yang
2nd F- El Facil
3rd B- The Alliance
4th D- Rubinski and Phezzan
5th A- Reinhard's power hungry Reich
6th E- The Goldenbaum Dynasty
7th G- The crazy Earthers

Hilda came to the conclusion that the best way to win the war was the death of Yang. Damn her!

Who was the other admiral at the meeting? We had Oberstein, Mittenmeyer, Reuenthal, Mueller, Bittenfeld, Fahrenheit, but I can't remember who the final guy is.

Disappointed Reinhard continues his path to evildom. He is now attacking the Alliance out of boredeom. Great guy...

I love Oberstein. I'm delighted with how does he manage to make his position clear. When he confronted Reuental he better on his stability, only to have it reinforced in the meantime. This was a battle of wits between them both that I enjoyed very much, and I foresee these kind of exchanges being more and more common in the future.

That being said, God, I hate Reuental. Well, it's not outright hate, it's just that his actions could harm all of Reinhardt's plans. He isn't suited for being the first man in power, and he should scrap his plans for rebellion. Letting his ambition run free in this changing-for-good times for the Reich would spell doom on all of the Galaxy.

In a way, I picture him as the Spanish President Arias Navarro, who succeeded Gen. Franco as strongman after his death, only for him to fail miserably in maintaining the regime, which would have been avoided if not for the death of former president Carrero Blanco, the grey eminence of the Generalissimo. I wonder if this story will follow history's steps. As it's said, History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes.

I'm also delighted to see Reinhard recover his past spirits. I wonder how Oberstein felt with this decision, though it's something he was already expecting. The Free Planets Alliance will be crushed with no doubt.

Anyway, that scene when Hilda winked to herself was very cute.

this episode shows what LOGTH have it's strength:
- myrtemyer, reuntal and oberstaing conversations was true "battle of wist"
- the change in mind of reinhard. i understand why at the start of the episode he wanted to keep peaceful, he thought a lot of how kircheis would handle this. but at the end vigor made him back to his usual self. true masterpiece twist.

marindro making that list of "possible enemies". from some reason i have a feeling those who she marked will be the one to make a cameo.

Cool setup episode.

So it seems it will be Oberstein vs Ruental and Mitt then. I’m definitely rooting for the first one, because Oskar seems too violent to rule anything whatsoever and Mitt is not capable of doing politics. My man Paul is the perfect Machiavellian character, doing the best he can to consolidate Reinhardt’s power throughout the galaxy. Interesting drama going forward between them.

Also, Reinhard decision sorta came out of nowhere. Well, thanks to Bittenfeld now we can have more senseless violence in the universe! Yay!

Side note: I wonder where Julian and crew are after 3 months.

Really great episode for Reinhard and other highest ranking admirals. The whole constant debating when Reinhard isn't around just adds that rare greatness to individual side characters developments, Oberstein is not getting support but still hes managing to hold his stand.

Maybe Reuntal is truly accepting the fact that any kind of betray on Kaiser would just be pointless since none can replace a man like that and even he isn't capable of such leadership abilities.
