Pastel Experiment - Brisby
Don't worry guys, I'm not just going to draw this character non-stop for the rest of forever. But some of you may remember a while back I bought a set of pastels, toyed with them briefly and then never touched them again, heh. Well, I recently noticed while fiddling about that pastels actually seem to work quite well on regular printer paper, and I wanted to play around with the idea of actually making a painting out of them. Since I've been having fun with the character anyway I figured I'd give it a go...
A smarter person than me would probably have spent some time trying various effects with pastel and getting a feeling for how they work. I'm not a smart person however, so I decided to just dive in and see what happens.
Result is a bit lame, I really have no idea how to control pastels and everything just ended up blended into oblivion. But it was my first attempt at a pastel drawing so I figured I'd toss it up anyway. It sucks not having much to post aside from headshot doodles, so here we are.
Anyway, this was a fun little distraction I guess... back to studying. D:

T'was the first time, indeed! Honestly not much of a movie person in general, never really have been. I've got a lot of catching up to do it seems!
For what it's worth, I might be an adult but the first time watching it was still pretty fantastic. I don't think it lost much of it's wonder to age, mine -or- it's. :P

This looks really gorgeous. I don't think anyone would mind seeing some of the classic cartoons and films brought to life in your style. You may have been new to using that medium, but most of it has worked out well. I only see you gaining proficiency in it as time goes on. c: I wouldn't mind seeing some art from you in this medium of The Rescuers Down Under. :3c
I'm not sure if we'll see many other characters from me... I'm generally not a huge fan of fan art, there's just something about this particular movie that grabbed me. Who knows though, I plan to study a bunch of movies, perhaps something else will really speak to me. :P But thank you, I'm glad you liked it!
I've been toying with the idea of drawing Justin at some point. If I had to name a second favorite character, he'd probably be the one.
I've got a tortillion actually, I'm just not a huge fan of it. I find it gets clogged up too easily and takes forever to clean up with sandpaper or what have you... but perhaps I should give it another shot. I'm more used to trying it with coloured pencil, perhaps pastel is more agreeable. I'll look into it!

Three reasons I love those recent pictures: They're gorgeous, and the style is beautiful - I've always been a fan of Don Bluth movies, both for his character design and the lovely, detailed backgrounds. Second: Finally! someone else rememberes this movie in particular and honors it with beautiful fanart. (I know you said you don't usually do fanart - just makes it count more imo). Third: N.I.M.H is one of the two events in my childhood that made me a furry. (The other was the Narnia Chronicals)
Can't wait for your next pictures :)

It can't really be said that I'm remembering the movie in the traditional sense, as I only first saw it a week or so ago. But I am quite enamored of it, for what it's worth! As for fanart, there's some pretty good stuff out there if you search around a bit. Maybe just avoid FA for it, unless you're into that sorta thing... x3
Anywho, I'm glad you liked my little doodle, thanks a bunch! :3

They're tricky, but I'm used to working with watercolours so I'm no stranger to fighting with a difficult medium, haha. While I've got much to learn, simply being able to put lighter colours on top of darker ones was a huge advantage and made some things much easier!
Thank yas! :3

One thing I've learned from Toastmasters is that you shouldn't admit your mistakes. Chances are fairly good that no one would ever notice.
I see nothing wrong with this picture, honestly -- the pastels do indeed work really well on printer paper.
I've never seen the Rats of NIMH movies, then suddenly I've seen three bits of art and a snippet of the first film in the last two days. Coincidence...

I've made it a point to stop mentioning issues quite so much in my commissions, to avoid the risk of making the buyer aware of some very tiny issue they might not otherwise have noticed, thereby reducing their enjoyment of the picture. It sounds... seedy, but I really think it's the best for everyone. This however is a time of learning and experimentation, and I think it's the perfect time to let everyone know that I know what my issues are and am working to improve on them. :P
I'd definitely recommend the Secret of NIMH, if you're into that kind of movie. I enjoyed it, but apparently the sequel is the worst thing ever so perhaps avoid that one.

Aw, thank yas! The background was a pretty large focus of my time, so I'm glad to hear it got noticed. It definitely needs work though, but this should serve as a nice reference point to see how I've progressed once I study backgrounds for a while I think. In the meantime, I'm glad you liked it! :D
I'm less interested in the scared stuff (though some of the scenes where she's being chased will make for good dynamic pose study...), but the vast majority of my work is designed to have positive emotion. It would be interesting to see if I can bring up some sadness, too. I've got a few ideas for pictures I might try somewhere down the line, see if I'm capable of tuggin' at the ole heart strings at all.
Well, it was three without anything else in between, but I suppose even that's not all that much. Feels like a lot more I guess, since I've been studying backgrounds and colouring from the movie for days.
I may have to look into hairspray, though I feel like it would cause the same discolouration that fixative does... won't know 'till I try I suppose.

Pastels are weird that way- technically they are applied very similar to charcoal or coloured pencil, but the final product is usually called a 'painting'. Not really sure why, but if I had to guess I'd say it's because, even if the medium looks closer to pencils, the process of using them is more similar to painting, where you lay down large areas at once and blend and push colours around, which is very unlike what's done with pencils.
